COVID-19 is the illness caused by a coronavirus, sometimes referred as the "novel coronavirus", that was detected in late 2019.

In Foldit, the Coronavirus Spike Protein puzzles present a key protein from the COVID-19 coronavirus, the "spike" that allows the virus to bind to human cells, initiating a infection. The puzzles invite players to design a protein which binds to the spike, potentially preventing the virus from causing an infection.

See coronavirus gallery for snapshots of player designs from the early rounds of the coronavirus puzzles.
