Fun with functions

Dedicated Foldit wiki watchers may have noticed a flurry of activity around the pages documenting the Foldit Lua functions.

Some of this activity was prompted by questions in chat. Many of the pages which detail the workings of each individual function simply didn't exist. In Foldit Lua functions, you'll see the missing pages as "redlinks", meaning you'll be asked to create the page if you click on the red link.

Another chunk of updating was prompted by the new pages making the old pages look bad.

There are a few stylistic and technical enhancements involved. I've been trying to apply these consistently on the new and updated pages, but it's still a work in progress. Here's the list, presented here so I don't forget if nothing else.

First, the…

New Year's Resolutions

  1. make this a better wiki.

The new puzzle types, including the Alfatoxin challenge, the classroom puzzles, and the sketchbook puzzles haven't really found their into the wiki yet.

.]] Nevertheless, since it's a new year, and since it's a refreshing -15° C outside, there have been a few new additions.

There's a new Sidechain Bonding Gallery and a companion Sidechain Bonding Table, fulfilling some of last year's resolutions.

One of the classroom puzzles featured ribonucleic acid, so there's a new RNA page, and even deep-dive into RNA backbone.

Deoxyribonucleic acid has also showed up in a couple of intro puzzles, so there's now a DNA page just to keep things balanced. (The intro puzzles don't allow the recipes used to explore backbone, so the DNA …

Foldit for Beginners

There's a new Beginner Puzzles page, which links to the detail pages for the six beginner puzzles that run in constant six-week rotation. The detail pages have also been updated and expanded.

Over at Foldit central, there's a new forum post Get Started Playing Foldit!, which replaces the beta_helix's HOW TO DOWNLOAD AND START PLAYING FOLDIT! from 2010. The new post was one of Inkycatz's last official acts, and a few spots (like anywhere you see a Foldit download link) still point to the beta_helix classic. Inkycatz assured us that those links will get updated eventually.

The next step here in wikiland is getting our own "start playing Foldit page" done. There's still not a good map on how to move beyond the intro puzzles. The How to get star…

Totally Scripted

When I started playing four years ago, one of the most confusing parts of Foldit was scripting.

The sample recipes in the cookbook were all GUI recipes. It was less than clear that there were two types of Lua recipes, V1 and V2, which use different functions. The was no mix-and-match between the two versions, so adding V2 functions in a V1 recipe is a no-go.

The wiki didn't do a lot to reduce the confusion. A lot of the scripting pages were written before version 2 of the Foldit Lua Interface was introduced. There was a lot of information, but not a lot of guidance.

So at long last, it was time for an overhaul. It's still a work-in-progress, but here's what we have so far.

The beginner scripting tutorials have been completely revised and conve…

Wiggle Room

I thought I understood wiggle and local wiggle, but my ideas didn't match what I found on the wiki pages.

After some chatting with Susume, alwen, and Formula350, I finally did a little testing. (As Susume pointed out, "wiggle is determinate".)

The big surprise was local wiggle. In the original interface, when you right-click (or control-click) and select "Wiggle" from the wheel menu, you get local wiggle. If you click on a sheet, it local wiggles the sheet and any adjacent loop sections. The wiki had the local wiggle part correct (although not super-clear).

In the selection interface, if you double-click on the same sheet, it selects the sheet and adjacent loops. But when you wiggle, you get global wiggle. Even though it's wiggling the same segm…

New Hope for the Baffled

The big news is the Intro Puzzles has been updated almost beyond recognition.

For one thing, it's now called "Intro Puzzles", where the old version was still "Tutorial Puzzles". Not sure when the name changed, but it's been a while. The old page should redirect to the new page.

The main Intro Puzzles page has been split into sub-pages. So you'll now see pages like Intro Puzzles/Electron Density. The new format should make for easier navigation with less scrolling. On the main Intro Puzzles page, there's an icon for each puzzle. Just click on the icon to get the help for that puzzle.

Each puzzle page now links to the next and previous puzzles, using the same icons.

The new format is also a lot easier to deal with in the wiki editor. I'd still rec…

Hello from wikiland

I'm still having fun trying to whip this wiki into shape. Thanks to spmm for granting me and Paul Dunn additional rights. We now rule this wiki with an iron fist. (Technically, Paul has the iron fist, while I have heavy-duty rubber gloves and a large pair of tweezers. Let me know if you need something tweezed.)

Part of the fun has been taking pictures of proteins, which is a lot easier in Foldit than in real life. I noticed that screen shots with a light background have a faint yellow cast, and figured out how to adjust the window background to fix it. My camera is trusty Paint Shop Pro (PSP), a venerable not-free but not-too-expensive product. It can also fix backgrounds, but it's easier to get them right from the start.

I've also been tryi…

Latest Wiki Work

January has been a busy month on the Foldit wiki. Here are some of the highlights.

To start, here's a tip. One annoyance in working with wiki pages has been how it handles images. The images tend to end up in the wrong spot, wrapped around text where you don't want them. The following HTML can help to control where the images go:

To use this tip you have to select the "classic" editor next to the "Edit" drop-down. In the classic editor, switch to the "Source" tab. The "br" commmand can be pasted in source mode, and it's also easier to position the image tags correctly. (Image sizing still doesn't work quite as expected, but that's another subject.)

The Foldit 101 - Game Interfaces and selection interface pages were updated. There's also a new…

Dusting off the Foldit wiki...

It's been over three years since Marie Suchard made the last blog post.

In her farewell post, Marie noted:

The wiki is not well organized. In many pages, there is a mix of description of the game, strategy, scientific information and general thought on the game.

Not a lot has changed since then. Paul Dunn has tirelessly continued to update the puzzle results. I've made some updates, such as updating the list of Foldit Lua Functions. Bruno Kestemont, Susume, and a few anonymous folk have also contributed. (My apologies to anyone I've overlooked.)

I see that Marie may even be with us in spirit, as a certain "Msuchard" removed some malicious links from the "101 - Cookbook" page as recently as 30 December 2016.

The first few days of 2017 had been a…

I start playing in may 2008 until October 2013. I am not a biologist and learned about the game in The Economist. I begin to play without thinking too much as an occupation of my fingers when I listen to music. I was more and more engaged on almost all the aspects of the game like writing recipes, helping on the chat, being a moderator and writing in the wiki.

I played for the fun of the game. For me, the game was fun be…

Strategy

And now to my strategy:

First of all i have a few points i follow everytime! Keep them in mind everytime you got stuck!:

  • Points you got, do not have to be positive at late game!
  • the slowest way is the best way ;) (although we don't have time :P)

Darkknight900 (talk) 13:14, August 15, 2012 (UTC)

Often you get a puzzle where you can shake, wiggle and also rebuild to get about 4/5 to 9/10 of the points you will get after a bit handwork. Without handwork you will get into a peek where it is impossible to come to the top ten!

And as you can see me as a 99%-script-user i also use a bit handwork because this is essential for the later game.

Loop Games:
You should look for unlocked sidechains, often around a locked ligand if it is a ligand puzzle. Try to pull the…
